Dr. Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman

Dr. Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman is a 4th generation native of Tampa and Associate Professor of Sociology and Center for African & African American Studies at Rice University. She received her B.A. from Cornell University and her M.A. & Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University. Dr. Hordge-Freeman published her first book, The Color of Love: Racial Features, Stigma, and Socialization in Black Brazilian Families (The University of Texas Press) in 2015. This book was awarded the American Sociological Association (ASA) Section on Emotions Book Award, ASA Body and Embodiment Best Publication Award, and the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interactionism Charles Horton Cooley Book Award. In 2022, Hordge-Freeman published her new book, Second-Class Daughters: Black Brazilian Women and Informal Adoption as Modern Slavery, which is based on nearly ten years of ethnographic data and interviews.
